About
The
Stew
The Stew Jams is a grass-roots hip hop collective from the Coast Salish territories of the the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tseil-Waututh) peoples, aka Vancouver. With a home base of The Red Gate, organizers, Larisa Marie, Chris Couto and Rupert Common host monthly (though on pause for the time being) improvisation sessions, and facilitate live cyphers and workshops. Each event features live musicians, a DJ, and a street-dance showcase. Local designers and visual artists are also invited to display and sell their work.
Since its inception in March 2018, The Stew Jams has provided a space for freestylers, vocalists, and instrumentalists to connect through music and raise their level of skill in an organic, funky and soulful environment, while fostering community in the process. Much like the roots of Hip-Hop, The Stew’s roots are steeped in social activism, always striving to provide a mic to voices that need to be heard.
Emerging from this stew is a core group of artists who have performed as “The Stew Jams” at festivals such as AHFOMAD, Surrey Fusion Fest, and the Vancouver Mural Fest, though the truest essence of the Stew Jams resides in our monthly gathering.
The number one intention behind The Stew is community, so get in where you fit in and come fill up on some soul food!
